For information that pertains to entry requirements into Costa Rica, the following sources provide a wealth of information:
In addition to knowing exact entry requirements, another best-practice advice would be to pay attention to the CR news cycles and focus on any changes in policy. It is always preferred to not be taken by surprise by some policy change that just can appear from nowhere. Recently the following new policy has been implemented for minors and individuals who are fully vaccinated;
As of August 1, 2021, all tourists under 18 years of age can enter the country without a travel policy.
As of August 1, 2021, all tourists who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and inoculated with Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson can enter the country without a travel policy. The last dose of the vaccine must have been applied at least 14 days before arrival in Costa Rica.
Vaccinated tourists must attach the vaccination certificate to the Health Pass. As proof, vaccination certificates and vaccination cards that contain at least the following information will be accepted:
1. Name of the person who received the vaccine
2. Date of each dose
3. Pharmaceutical house
In the case of U.S. travelers, the “COVID-19 vaccination record card” will be accepted.
Tourists not vaccinated, with incomplete vaccination or vaccinated with a serum other than those admitted by the Costa Rican authorities, must purchase mandatory travel insurance that covers lodging in case of quarantine and medical expenses due to COVID-19 disease as detailed below.
Mandatory Covid-19 Test for Re-Entry to US
Current Policy for re-entry to the US from Costa Rica is that each traveler, adult or juvenile, must have a negative Covid-19 Test.
As stated in the updated CDC Policy;
Testing – ALL Travelers
Before boarding a flight to the United States, you are required to show a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 1 day before travel.
Children under 2 years old do not need to test. There is also an option for people who have documented recovery from COVID-19 in the past 90 days. Learn more about these requirements.
There are many options to choose from to obtain this service, and some people prefer to fulfill this requirement at SJO Airport. Getting your test at SJO will mean arriving at the airport many hours before your flight departs. Better advice would be to prepare for unexpected events that just can happen for any number of inexplicable reasons, and therefore have your Covid-19 Test completed prior to your departure date. For this service, we can recommend one medical office in Uvita – Consultorio Médico Vargas. The cost is high ($145 USD), but our experience leads to being cautious and being prepared, rather than hoping everything will be ok by just showing up a few hours earlier at SJO.
